just now learned that Iron Maiden’s original drummer Clive Burr died like…two months ago :( This is a really shit-ass year for classic metal musicians. I still air-drum the beginning of this song whenever I need to get myself psyched up for something.

Funkadelic has a toehold in funk and soul and progressive rock and hip-hop and dance music and heavy metal and here they are doing all of them at once, in their very first song to appear on an album. It’s somehow sinister and danceable, spacey in a particularly Krautrock vein, it’s been sampled to here and back again…I don’t think that Funkadelic really gets the credit they deserve for how amazing they are. Lots of people like them but I don’t think their status as Total Game Changers is particularly acknowledged.

This album isn’t anything to write home about as of yet but I love how nasty and thick the guitars are on this track.

Renegades documents the fans of Botswana’s heavy metal subculture, an underground minority rebelling against the status quo, redrawing the borders of both heavy metal and orthodox culture in Botswana. Marshall traveled to Botswana to take portraits of the metal scene there – a small but strong one, heavily influenced by bands like Iron Maiden, Megadeath and Motörhead.

“I can’t recall one instance where they were reluctant or dubious towards my taking their portraits,” says Marshall. “In most cases they relished the opportunity to show themselves off. They are proud and wield a sort of tangible power, wrought from both the fantasy and sonic force of metal. Whereas many ‘metal heads’ can be arrogant or smugly indifferent, these guys in Botswana are very open.”
