Cassandra Cain, the Black Bat
I don’t really understand this character, but if I did I would want to do so through a comic that looks like this.
‘Batgirl’ #19 Features First Openly Transgender Character In Mainstream Superhero Comics
The sibling conflict teased on the cover of Batgirl #19 may be the hook that pulls readers in, but it will be another reveal in the issue that will occupy a spot in comics history, as one of the book’s characters will reveal she is transgender, the first time a character has done so in a mainstream superhero comic.
Wired reports that writer Gail Simone was inspired to create a transgender character by a conversation with Batwoman co-creator Greg Rucka at Wondercon a few years ago. Simone asked why there seem to be fewer gay male comics characters than lesbian heroes (such as Batwoman). Rucka replied it would be a huge sign of progress for a gay male character to appear on a comic cover. It’d be even bigger if the character was transgender.
Find out just who will be revealing her transgender status in the book, as well as have a look at the full cover to Batgirl #19, on ComicsAlliance.
Wait, I don’t think that’s how that works. “Attribute: Gay. +5 stacking bonus for transgender.” I would rather have more gays and transgendered people represented in comics on their own terms as opposed to trying to earn stripes via the representation of an all-encompassing VegnaQueer.
I’m totally, totally not saying that there shouldn’t be gay transgender characters in comics because that would be an atrocious thing to think. But something about the way this decision was arrived at rubs me the wrong way. A transgendered gay person isn’t like, the difference between Bulbasaur and Ivysaur, wherein a gay person knows Vine Whip and a transgendered gay person can learn Razor Leaf, you know?

I know this has made its rounds on Tumblr but I can’t help it. I just really love the message behind it.

I JUST REMEMBERED I HAD THE ORIGINAL VERSION OF THE PAGE TOO.
THAT MAKES THIS DOUBLE FUN!
Who’s the artist on this? The top page particularly but both would be good.

Since we’re on the topic of creative changes, one of the things that was a big discussion point for a while was Gail Simone being on and off “Batgirl.” With Gail now reinstated on the title, I have to ask — how much was fan outcry and fan support part of that creative editorial decision?
Harras: What we had was Ray [Fawkes] coming on for two months to help out, schedule-wise. We’re very happy Gail is back; she’s on the book moving forward, so to me, that was a moment in time where we were just looking for Gail’s next plot to come in and we’re moving forward.

Follow-up question: “When the news broke, Simone herself said that she was informed she was no longer the new writer. That doesn’t sound as temporary as simply waiting on her next plot. Can you expand on what happened here? Was there a miscommunication?”
Don’t let these people rewrite history and use your platform to do it.

I kind of miss reading about superheroes who are also buds. I don’t know when that stopped happening but I haven’t seen it too much recently.
